[GOOD WORK]

There’s No One There in NYC

by Joe on May 23, 2012 at 6:16 am (no responses)

My work opens tonight, this Wednesday, May 23rd at 7 PM, in New York. The previously mentioned work will be installed at Studio-X, in conjunction with the release of the newest issue of the literary journal Ninth Letter, and it’s related chapbook, Man-Made Lands, edited by Scott Geiger.

The prints, just back from their debut at the Telfair Art Museum’s Pulse exhibition, explore the loneliness and claustrophobia inherent in the insular world of video games. In addition to the installation, there will be a lively conversation with other contributors to the chapbook about digital landscapes, imaginary buildings, and the blurring of the lines between our real and fictional online lives, as well beer and wine. It should be a blast. The text of the press release is below. I very much hope to see you there, if you’re in the area.

Columbia University’s Studio-X NYC celebrates the release of Man-Made Lands and the Spring/Summer 2012 issue of Ninth Letter with an evening of drinks, lasers and talk on Wednesday, May 23 at 7pm. Man-Made Lands, a collection of seven stories and five real architectural and landscape proposals for cities around the world, will premiere as Ninth Letter’s first-ever special edition chapbook. Contributors Seth Fried, author of story collection The Great Frustration; architect Dong-Ping Wong of Family; designer Archie Lee Coates from Office of PlayLab; and artist Joe Alterio join guest editor Scott Geiger in a conversation about Kickstarter fictions and the literature of the built environment. “There’s No One There,” Joe Alterio’s commission for Man-Made Lands, will be installed on exhibit. In addition to the serigraph series created for Ninth Letter, this exhibit will feature easter egg pieces visible only within Studio-X. Beer for the event is generously sponsored Great Lakes Brewing Company of Cleveland to celebrate the work of James Corner Field Operations across multiple projects in northeast Ohio.
